Poet and critic (and A.i.A. contributing editor) Raphael Rubinstein's blog The Silo, conceived as a "personal, revisionist 'dictionary' of contemporary art," comes to life in this exhibition of works by 29 artists at Garth Greenan. (Rubinstein's blog currently includes 52 entries total.) There's a cabinet-of-curiosities feeling to this closely hung show, though the writer's engagement with conceptualism and formal experimentation emerge upon viewing. Provisional painting is but one through line in the medium, standing toe-to-toe with a bright abstraction by Shirley Jaffe, a colorful block-lettered message by Gene Beery ("NOTE: MAKE A PAINTING OF A NOTE AS A PAINTING") and cartoon-inspired figuration by Valerio Adami. Also included are a Robert Heinecken-esque photographic triptych by James Collins and sculptures by Mary Bauermeister, Melvin Edwards, Daniel Spoerri and Richard Van Buren.
